UW School of Nursing
Project Title: Advanced Practice Education -
Collaborative Mental Health Care
Project Director: Rica O’Connor, PhD, RN
Sponsor: Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Project Period: 7/1/2006 - 6/30/2009
To enhance our PMHNP masters program and contribute to elimination of health barriers and health disparities in ways that strengthen quality of care, we propose to link with four collaborating clinical partners – unique healthcare services that provide mental (and in most cases also physical) health care for low income people and/or people with complex conditions, including mental illness with co-occurring physical or with substance use disorders or who are recovering from emotional trauma histories. These agencies are all located in designated HPSA and/or MUA/P areas and are highly invested in participating in our students’ education.
We will enhance our curricular emphasis on prevention and treatment of psychiatric disabilities in older adults. We will intensify student recruitment in areas near our agency partners (particularly in the Hispanic migrant agricultural area in central Washington), continue to evolve our technologic enhancements and strategic scheduling to promote program access. We will institute a Kids into Health Careers initiative in central Washington.
The project will result in a workforce of more diverse, better skilled PMHNPs who are more equitably distributed in our state’s underserved areas.
